You’ve probably heard about ChatGPT. But what is it exactly?
ChatGPT is a chatbot created to help humans by answering questions and performing tasks using AI Technology. It was launched on November 30th, 2022 by OpenAI, an AI research company. ChatGPT uses natural language processing tools to complete tasks in a conversation-like format. For example, by asking it a question, it’ll compose an answer based on information gathered from previous conversations it’s had. If you tell ChatGPT to complete a task with a short description on what you’re looking for, ChatGPT can assist with all kinds of jobs such as writing formal emails, essays and even programming code.
How to Use ChatGPT
In order to use ChatGPT, you must register for an account with OpenAI. OpenAI does require a valid phone number for registration and account verification. Once you’ve accepted the terms and conditions, you’re ready to start! The next step is to play around with the prompts or questions that you ask ChatGPT. With trial and error, you’ll see what commands give better results. For example if you ask ChatGPT, “Write a formal email,” you’ll see that your results are vague and may not be suitable. Instead, try a prompt such as “Write a short formal email to my manager apologizing for missing our meeting this morning” and you’ll be able to get results much closer to what you need.
Is ChatGPT a Danger to Us?
Some people fear that ChatGPT is another step in the direction of making certain jobs obsolete. While ChatGPT is a great tool, ChatGPT isn’t going to be taking anyone’s job just yet.
This is because ChatGPT relies on humans to have good results. ChatGPT can’t keep up to date on information by itself. It relies on humans to give it new information and content to grow and learn from. People also feed varying information to ChatGPT. While one person might share what they believe to be the best ice cream flavor, another person is going to share that a different flavor is the best. This makes it difficult for ChatGPT to truly grasp what information is objective fact and what information is subjective opinion.
Because of this, ChatGPT will often give confident but incorrect answers where varying information may be at play. Again, ChatGPT is not truly understanding concepts so it completely depends on humans to work. Information is also always changing and requires data to be first collected by humans before ChatGPT can use the data to answer questions.
Pros and Cons of ChatGPT
Pros:
• Time saving
• Writing assistance
• Analyzes data very quickly
Cons:
• Confident, yet incorrect answers
• Susceptible to bias
• Inability to understand emotion or empathize
Conclusion
ChatGPT is a great tool but still only a tool and the results depend on the user. It won’t be taking over entire jobs anytime soon as its current task accuracy is still much lower than a human’s. ChatGPT is immensely helpful with short writing tasks and providing answers for objective questions. ChatGPT can definitely save people time as long as they are critically looking over the completed tasks to check for error.
